We meet in each other’s homes on the second Thursday of the month at 10.a.m from September to May (and sometimes over the summer too!). We have practical sessions when we research a particular ancestor together, or research a related topic which helps Group members to progress their own lines of research. It turns out that family history is a very broad subject…we’ve recently looked at dating family photographs (is this sepia photograph really Great Grandma?), studied palaeography (essential for transcribing early wills), used maps for family history research, looked at the amazing journeys our ancestors made and how to research the houses they lived in. We help each other and pass on useful tips. The joy of the Group is in sharing the triumphs of a breakthrough and the encouragement we get when all lines of research seem to come to a “brick wall”.
We’ve been meeting for several years and have a wealth of family history research experience between us, but we all still have “brick walls”. Over the years we’ve travelled together to family history fairs, lectures, and sites of mutual interest; we find there’s always lots to learn about the lives and times of our ancestors.
We welcomed two new members last year so the Group is full at the moment.
